My Mama Told Me
1. The less tolerant you are of dishonesty, the more tolerant you must be of human frailty.
2. You better shop around.
3. Spend your money on things that can not be taken away from you - like an education, piano lessons, travel, etc.
4. You can’t hurry love, no, you just have to wait.
5. To receive forgiveness, you must be willing to grant it.

Love them all - especially #3. I think it also falls under the saying, “The best things in life aren’t things.”

As to #3- booze can’t be taken from me after I drink it, yes?
July 7th, 2008 at 10:54 am
i love #3. You should add “eating stuff” to that list.

Me thinks your mother was a tad more grounded then mine. My momma told me:
1. Put on your big girl panties and stop whining about it. (this is for anything from someone bullying you in third grade to the fact that you just lost your job)
2. Never wear underwear with synthetic fibers (I doubt she owns anything that’s not cotton)
3. Everything happens for a reason, just go with it and see where you land. (this haphazard, hippy-esqu approach to life makes my anal-retentive self want to smack my head against a wall)
4. Dogs are better than people… always… never doubt this.
5. If you spend your time worrying about what you don’t have you’ll never appreciate those things you do have. (of course she’s talking about buttercups and clean air… I’m busy lusting after that new coach bag I NEED…we are different creatures my mum and I)

Maternal words of wisdom:
My momma says knock you out!
July 8th, 2008 at 6:34 am
Oh, and, “let it be”.
July 8th, 2008 at 8:25 am
Seems everyone is pinpointing #3, so I think I will as well!
The only fault with #3 is that an iPhone can be taken away, but it’s clearly very important

And then there’s my mother, who has said more times than I can count, “Never pass up the opportunity to pee”.

July 9th, 2008 at 7:31 am
kt - this is not bad advice. When I was in Europe, I was told the same thing.
July 9th, 2008 at 8:44 am
Both are from songs. the first is from this old rap by L.L. Cool J entitled “Momma Said Knock You Out” that I listened to when I was a kid.
As for the best advice my mom gave me: “Keep your head down and come back safe”.

So here’s the thing… my Mom taught me only one thing: Never move in with a man without a ring on your finger. This was, of course, after she’d been married and divorced and then again lived with another gentleman. So.. .technically, she learned this on her third try. On her 4th, she lived with him before… Again, think she’s not the best to learn from. However, I do think it’s good to wait for the ring before living w/ a dude. So that there’s a stronger bond/commitment in case things go awry. I mean, who gets the apartment if you’ve been together a few years but not engaged/married and you break up? I feel like it’s easier to break up when there’s not that strong commitment that a ring brings… but, then again, that’s the girl in me…… what can I say? Who thought I’d be so traditional?!

Wise words.
July 11th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
Yeah - your mama and my mama must have known each other in a previous life. Good words of wisdom.

Bird Clan Diva - L.L. Cool J…man, that’s a flashback. Wasn’t he in that movie about the snake with J. Lo?
Good advice from mom.
